* My interpersonal score is 6.12 out of 7
* My initiative score is 6.12 out of 7 * My dependability total is 6.57 out of 7 Work ethic relies on how dependable and responsible people are and how they perform in their workspace. As per the Work Ethics article above, the three key points for a great work ethic are: interpersonal skills, taking initiative and being dependable. Every mentor and employer is in search of a student or employee that displays a superior work ethic is both their personal and professional lives. Generally, mentors and employers predict how you will interact and treat people in the work place based on how behave and communicate outside the work place and they may do this by asking you to attend a formal meeting lunch or dinner; this way they can assess your table manners along with your interaction with the people who serve you. Going back to the three key point: initiative, dependability and interpersonal skills; these are very valuable and everyone should constantly be trying to improve them regularly, because no one is perfect. Furthermore, interpersonal skills are the skills we demonstrate through our human-to- human interactions; these skills are a great indication of how we will work with our future team. Next, taking initiative is critical because without the additional drive, people tend to miss important and valuable opportunities for success and develop a negative impression by missing deadlines and not submitting quality work to their employers. Finally, dependability is the third key point. People who are dependable are the people who are always honest, reliable and punctual. Employers and mentors are always in search of quality people who can demonstrate these three qualities and standout to make their employer's organization more successful than it was before their arrival.

Communication is a vital part of being successful in any business, or for that matter, any environment that requires us to work among or alongside other people. In our everyday lives we communicate with each individual in a different manner. Why do we communicate with different individuals in different ways? After we get to a know a person well, we begin to understand their personalities, the way they respond and express their thoughts with you; it is critical to be able to understand people in this way because we need to be able to maintain our relationships with them. For example, we all know that when we are around friends we are relaxed, very informal and sarcastic well this may not be the best way to communicate with your parents because they may not understand our words as sarcastic and may interpret our responses as rude.
It is important to understand that, everyone has their own thoughts, beliefs, interpretations and perceptions about communication. In order to be able to maintain bonds with someone we have to adapt to their style of communication; this doesn’t mean that we have to change but it does mean that we have to be good listeners, and adjust to our environment. For example, when we go to our mentorships, we will not speak informally, be loud and sarcastic; instead, we will speak politely, in a normal, and clear inside voice. Some points you should consider when speaking to your mentor and people in the work place are: - Address people as Miss, Mr. or Mrs. - Speak clearly and confidently while maintaining a polite tone - Be a good listener - Follow instructions - Ask questions if you do not understand the task at hand - Always tell your mentor if you make a mistake! (you shouldn't hide it) In all, communication is the number one key to success because without communication lots of issues and misunderstandings arise. We need to be able to maintain strong, respectful and healthy relations with our mentors, friends, teachers as well as parents. We need to remember that communication can take people to new heights; but our technological age is interfering with our human to human interactions and this is why I think that valuable opportunities like mentorships can help make the difference between the people who soak themselves in technology and people who make a difference in our society. "Making the Most of Your Internship or Co-op" is an article written by Juliette McDonald. In this article, McDonald focuses on the value and importance of an internship opportunity for the intern as well as their employer. She emphasizes that you should always put forth your best efforts and enjoy what you do in order to successfully carry out the responsibilities and tasks assigned to you. McDonald, makes it very clear and stresses that internship opportunities are not only beneficial to the interns but to the employers too, because if they "hire" you then they are excited to meet you and work with you; they expect that you will be the driving force, energy and additional resource that their company was in need of. In all, McDonald conveys the idea that internships are a valuable learning experience for the interns because they give you hands on, real life experiences and can open the doors for your future and maybe even the company's future; it’s a win-win situation for everyone.

After watching JD Russo's TED talk, the most important thing that spoke out to was the fact that even after we have knowledge about a problem, we do not seem to care enough. His talk made me question myself: "why don't I ever act on the issues that I see our society face?". Like JD mentioned, the youth of today has all the knowledge possible through access to technology, despite such benefits, we do not take action and this is our worst mistake. It is up to us to stand-up, engage with one another, communicate about issues in our society and act to make improvements. We should not reply on the elders to do the work for us, because this is our time, our life and we need to take charge and give back. The youth of today needs to overlook indifferences, show more concern for the environment and society as a whole and further take immediate action because as we all have heard, "even the tiniest change/contribution can make the biggest difference". My passion is saving the environment. I believe that everyone must work together, show concern and contribute to the actions being taken to restore our deteriorating environment; because believe it or not, the future of the planet rests in our hands. This is our time, our life and our world; let's make it a better place for everyone. The youth of today owns the future and we have the knowledge, ability and responsibility to make the difference, because, "we must be the change, we wish to see in the world"- Gandhi. First impressions are extremely important; they set the perception your employers and mentors have of you from the first day to the last. As per the Knowing Your Mentor handout, it only takes 7 seconds for people to develop a perception of you, so it is best to start strong. This handout provides many important pointers on how people should behave, appear and speak when meeting a professional in the community. To begin with, it is essential to maintain a friendly smile, speak clearly, look the mentor/ employer in the eyes and introduce yourself with a firm handshake. Additionally, you should portray a high level of enthusiasm and willingness to experience their field of study; the easiest way to accomplish this is by asking questions about their daily work, responsibilities, and experiences. It is also important to remember that, you should also go prepared to answer questions that the professional may have for you and the best way to cross that bridge is be positive, answer the questions to your full capacity, be confident and do not make up answers that are not true; because trust is very important. You are guaranteed to make an excellent first impression if you follow these basic guidelines.
Furthermore, the First Impressions Podcast accentuates the importance of dressing professionally, communicating effectively with everyone, being punctual everyday and remembering the names and duties of all the people present daily in the workplace. Another important point is that, no matter how interesting or amusing it maybe, you should maintain distance from all the "office gossip" and people who are lazy and part-take in the gossip. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to be positive, enthusiastic, hardworking and ask questions to enhance your knowledge and grow. I am honored and very happy to be selected for the Honors Mentorship Program for the 2017-2018 school year. This year I aspire to work hard and gain hands-on experience in the pediatric medicine field. I wish to improve my leadership skills, show my mentor that I am responsible and capable of listening, learning and completing assigned tasks. To make the most of this amazing opportunity I will maintain a positive attitude and approach both inside and outside of my mentorship place, ask questions that will help me to enhance my knowledge and experience. Additionally, I intend on making this internship/ mentorship experience life-changing because I know that I can make a difference and this year my goal is to make an impact, become more insightful and have fun. I will not allow challenges to push me off the tracks of success; I will learn to overcome them and help my mentor by taking up responsibilities and taking initiative to ask for more opportunities. I will make this year a great year; a year that I will remember forever. |
