First impressions are extremely important; they set the perception your employers and mentors have of you from the first day to the last. As per the Knowing Your Mentor handout, it only takes 7 seconds for people to develop a perception of you, so it is best to start strong. This handout provides many important pointers on how people should behave, appear and speak when meeting a professional in the community. To begin with, it is essential to maintain a friendly smile, speak clearly, look the mentor/ employer in the eyes and introduce yourself with a firm handshake. Additionally, you should portray a high level of enthusiasm and willingness to experience their field of study; the easiest way to accomplish this is by asking questions about their daily work, responsibilities, and experiences. It is also important to remember that, you should also go prepared to answer questions that the professional may have for you and the best way to cross that bridge is be positive, answer the questions to your full capacity, be confident and do not make up answers that are not true; because trust is very important. You are guaranteed to make an excellent first impression if you follow these basic guidelines.
Furthermore, the First Impressions Podcast accentuates the importance of dressing professionally, communicating effectively with everyone, being punctual everyday and remembering the names and duties of all the people present daily in the workplace. Another important point is that, no matter how interesting or amusing it maybe, you should maintain distance from all the "office gossip" and people who are lazy and part-take in the gossip. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to be positive, enthusiastic, hardworking and ask questions to enhance your knowledge and grow. I am honored and very happy to be selected for the Honors Mentorship Program for the 2017-2018 school year. This year I aspire to work hard and gain hands-on experience in the pediatric medicine field. I wish to improve my leadership skills, show my mentor that I am responsible and capable of listening, learning and completing assigned tasks. To make the most of this amazing opportunity I will maintain a positive attitude and approach both inside and outside of my mentorship place, ask questions that will help me to enhance my knowledge and experience. Additionally, I intend on making this internship/ mentorship experience life-changing because I know that I can make a difference and this year my goal is to make an impact, become more insightful and have fun. I will not allow challenges to push me off the tracks of success; I will learn to overcome them and help my mentor by taking up responsibilities and taking initiative to ask for more opportunities. I will make this year a great year; a year that I will remember forever.
