At the beginning of this year when I found out I had been accepted into the Honors Mentorship Program I was very excited and honored, as a result, I set a few goals for myself. My goal this year for my mentorship was to make the most of this unique opportunity and learn as much as possible from the leaders working in the profession I one day hope to make a career in. After observing my mentors in action, I think the most unique aspect about this profession is the close bonds you build with the patients and how you make an impression on the children that walk in for their visits. My mentors have built such close relations with the children that most of the time, the children are excited to come in for their visits or if they are not excited, at least they are not afraid. The doctor and nurses in the clinic are very friendly and they are always finding new ways to make each child's visit memorable and comfortable. For example, on Halloween day, everyone dressed up like pirates and attended all their patient visits, I thought this was awesome because they were able to make the children happy, get them excited about Halloween and ease the atmosphere in the clinic. The best part of my internship is that I am allowed to shadow whoever I want; this means that on any given day, I can walk in with the nurse, observe her and then go back in with the doctor to observe her with the same patient. Since I am given this privilege, I get the opportunity to learn about the responsibility that everyone has, in addition to fully hearing the story behind each patient's visit. In the clinic, I get to handle some of the basic tasks such as taking the patient's height and weight, helping prepare the vaccine trays, and setting up equipment needed for examination.
Overall this year, I had the opportunity to work alongside the most amazing group of individuals, in a Pediatric Clinic. I am thankful to the One Family Pediatric Clinic's Staff for providing me the opportunity to intern and work alongside them this year. The experiences I have gathered this year are countless and very unique; I have prepared vaccines, taken patient vitals, and operated various medical examination technologies, all independently! In addition, I have improved my interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and learned to communicate properly and effectively. My time spent with One Family Pediatrics, was nothing short of life changing; the experiences and knowledge I have walked away with will always remain a vital and memorable aspect of my life. My HMP experiences mark the beginning of my journey to become a successful Pediatrician in my future. Some advise I would give to next year's honors mentorship would be: start off your internship with a positive attitude and enthusiasm. Make sure to complete the weekly assignments on time and stay organized because it will be a huge benefit when you begin to put the final capstone project together.

My name is Isha Naidu and this year for Honors Mentorship, I had the opportunity to work alongside the most amazing group of individuals, at One Family Pediatrics Clinic. My mentors were Dr. Lavania and Clinic Manager Lauraleigh Windom. Along with my internship, I worked on a yearlong capstone project for which I focused on the following essential question: How does lack of sleep affect growth and development in children? What changes can be made to help future generations reduce risks associated with sleep deprivation? After conducting extensive research about my topic I was able to combine the knowledge I gained from various sources and fully answer the question. Through the published studies and reports I learned about the current research on sleep patterns in adolescents, factors contributing to chronic sleep loss (ex: electronic media use, caffeine consumption), and health-related consequences, such as depression, increased obesity risk, and higher rates of drowsy driving accidents. Overall, this capstone project has not only provided me with knowledge that I can share with the people around me, but it has also taught me about some of the improvements I can make in my own life regarding this issue.

After watching the Wellcast video and referring to the worksheet I have understood that public speaking requires immense preparation; not just mental but physical. The first point that stood out is that in order to be prepared for my presentation, I need to write down the main ideas I want to get across to the audience. I learned from this video that, in order to capture the audience's attention I should begin with a hook (quote or anecdote), use personal stories and facts to support all your evidence and finally, I have to make sure to incorporate a strong conclusion. Furthermore, I also learned from this video that, while it is important to have a good (script) or ideas of how the presentation will go, I must maintain good posture and use strong hand motions. Overall, to successfully complete a presentation, it is vital to prepare and know what your presentation is about. It is also important to be natural and maintain the right posture and body language because this will help keep you calm and composed.

This report conveys the current research on sleep patterns in adolescents, factors contributing to chronic sleep loss (ex: electronic media use, caffeine consumption), and health-related consequences, such as depression, increased obesity risk, and higher rates of drowsy driving accidents. The report also discusses the potential role of later school start times as a means of reducing adolescent sleepiness. The information provided in this research report is vital for me since I will use this research to further my understanding on how and why pediatric patients are so effected by lack of sleep. I will use this study to learn about the different and specific types of growth and development issues that affect pediatric patients. After reading Mr. Owens's report, I have received a better understanding of my research topic and I now know the various types of issues I will need to address and further research about, in order for my capstone project to be successful. Furthermore, I believe this source is credible because it includes research conducted by Judith Owens, MD, MPH, FAAP, ADOLESCENT SLEEP WORKING GROUP, and COMMITTEE ON ADOLESCENCE; all highly qualified professionals in this particular field. Most importantly, this report includes an array of professional studies and research points conducted by different people and this makes the report more credible because more than one group or person is suggesting and can prove one topic with confidence. Additionally, I have selected a few of Mr. Judith Owens's quotes that pose an important role in his article. These quotes are essential in alerting the readers about the main and most significant points addressed by his work and other professional research.

Throughout my internship experience I have learned may different aspects of the pediatrics field. Since January, my mentor has been providing me unique opportunities to receive hands-on intensive learning. As for my capstone project, I have been interviewing professionals in the medical field aside from my mentor, in order to gather quality research on my topic. I have finalized my capstone research project to center around the question: how does lack of sleep affect growth and development in children? What changes can be made to help future generations reduce risks associated with sleep deprivation? Additionally, I have been conducting independent research to further my understanding of the research topic as well as preparing various forms of visuals such as brochures, Power Points and interactive flyers. As my internship progresses I hope to conduct more interviews, receive in depth hands-on experience and take on more responsibilities as I have begun to do recently.
Sleep deprivation and its effect on child growth. (2016, June 05). Retrieved January 26, 2018, from http://www.circadin.com/news-views/sleep-deprivation-and-its-effect-on-child-growth/
The author of this article writes about the various effects of sleep deprivation in children and further explains ways to overcome these issues. He mentions various effects on the child's body and he backs up his facts by including other professional opinions, for example, "A recently published study showed that children with growth hormone deficiency, experienced substantially less sleep and lower quality of sleep compared to children with normal level of growth hormone" (Pearl 2). The information provided in this article is vital for me since I will use this research to further my understanding on how and why children are so effected by lack of sleep. I will use this study to learn about the different and specific types of growth and development issues that affect pediatric patients. After reading Mr. Pearl's article, I have received a better understanding of my research topic and I now know the various types of issues I will need to address and further research about, in order for my capstone project to be successful. Furthermore, I believe this source is credible because it includes research written by Zach Pearl, a highly qualified professional with a PhD. Additionally, Pearl not only writes from his own studies but he also includes scientific references in his article in order to validate it even more. For instance he references several other research efforts such as the FLAME study. Additionally, I have selected a few of Mr. Pearl's quotes that pose an important role in his article. These quotes are essential in alerting the readers about the main and most significant points addressed by his work and other professional research.

The essential question I am interested in researching is, how does lack of sleep affect growth and development in children? What changes can be made to help future generations reduce risks associated with sleep deprivation? I chose to focus my research on this topic because day-by-day more and more children and teenagers are becoming affected by this issue. I believe it to vital for parents, guardians and children themselves to be able to understand how daily routine affects development and growth, long-term. To best- showcase my project I envision myself creating an informative and interactive website as well as appealing brochures to hand-out to my target audience. In order to enhance my project and conduct a "real inquiry" I plan on conducting more interviews with different professionals with this area of expertise. As of now I have conducted one basic interview to find the simple questions that make a base for my research but as I progress further I believe it is important to interview and collect opinions and facts from different professionals.
