My name is Isha Naidu and this year for Honors Mentorship, I had the opportunity to work alongside the most amazing group of individuals, at One Family Pediatrics Clinic. My mentors were Dr. Lavania and Clinic Manager Lauraleigh Windom. The experiences I have gathered this year are countless and very unique; I have prepared vaccines, taken patient vitals, and operated various medical examination technologies, all independently! In addition, I have improved my interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and learned to communicate properly and effectively. My time spent with One Family Pediatrics, was nothing short of life changing; the experiences and knowledge I have walked away with will always remain a vital and memorable aspect of my life. My HMP experiences mark the beginning of my journey to become a successful Pediatrician in my future. Along with my internship, I worked on a yearlong capstone project for which I focused on the following essential question: How does lack of sleep affect growth and development in children? What changes can be made to help future generations reduce risks associated with sleep deprivation? After conducting extensive research about my topic I was able to combine the knowledge I gained from various sources and fully answer the question. Through the published studies and reports I learned about the current research on sleep patterns in adolescents, factors contributing to chronic sleep loss (ex: electronic media use, caffeine consumption), and health-related consequences, such as depression, increased obesity risk, and higher rates of drowsy driving accidents. Overall, this capstone project has not only provided me with knowledge that I can share with the people around me, but it has also taught me about some of the improvements I can make in my own life regarding this issue.
